passage this morning the perfect righteousness of Christ granted to us as a gift is the only hope we. have of entering into the Kingdom of Heaven 5 20,Background. In our study of Matthew we have come to the Sermon on the Mount Matt 5 7 The Sermon. on the Mount is a Messianic Manifesto Jesus is the King and here He tells us about the citizens of His. Kingdom He tells us what they are like and how they live in the world. As we have studied Matthew 5 1 16 we have seen Jesus describe what the citizens of the. Kingdom are like We have seen their character set forth in the Beatitudes Christians are unlike the. men and women of this world Men and women of the world live for SELF but the citizens of the. Kingdom reject SELF and live for God Last week we saw that Jesus says His followers are salt and. light in the world Christians have been given a fundamentally new identity They are the people who. work to make the world better and they are the people who demonstrate the holiness and truth of. God through their lives, This week we begin a new section of the sermon For much of the rest of the sermon 5 17 to. 7 14 Jesus will describe how the citizens of the Kingdom live in the world In our passage this. morning we will see that those who follow Jesus keep God s commandments in this life They are. righteous But the righteousness of the Christian is a not a product of his obedience to the Law of God. Instead their obedience to the Law flows out of a heart that has been changed by the grace of God. They keep the Law of God because they have been granted the perfect righteousness of Christ. MIM Those who have received the perfect righteousness of Christ keep the commands of God. Matthew 5 17 20 Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets I have not come to. abolish them but to fulfill them 18 For truly I say to you until heaven and earth pass away not an iota. not a dot will pass from the Law until all is accomplished 19 Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least. of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of. heaven but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven 20 For I. tell you unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees you will never enter the. kingdom of heaven, This morning I want us to look at three truths from this passage. Jesus had a high view of the Law of God,Christians should have a high view of the Law. A high view of the Law shows us our need for a perfect righteousness. I Jesus had a high view of the Law of God 5 17 18, A The crowds surrounding Jesus must have been listening to every word with anticipation.
Was this the promised Messiah Had He come to overthrow the Roman oppressors Some. Jews of the time thought that when the Messiah came He would not only defeat the. enemies of the Jews but he would also tone down the Law of Moses making it easier to. John MacArthur Matthew 1 7 in The MacArthur New Testament Commentary Chicago Moody Press. B Certainly some questioned Jesus commitment to the Law of Moses He clearly did not. follow the traditions of the fathers the great rabbis teachers and scribes of the past who. had given interpretations of how to obey the Law of God By Jesus day many thought. these traditions were just as authoritative as the Old Testament itself The rabbis had. determined the precise number of commandments in the Law Genesis through. Deuteronomy 613 There were 248 positive commands and 365 negative commands and. the rabbis had given all kind of insights on these commandments And they not only. enforced these 613 commandments but actually added traditions that detailed precisely. HOW every commandment was to be kept The Jewish religious leaders had tied these. traditions so closely to the commands of the Old Testament that to break the traditions was. seen as breaking the Law itself, Illustration In his commentary John MacArthur gave an illustration of the kind traditions and. procedures that the rabbis demanded Jewish men and women obey. The rabbis looked through Scripture to find various commands and regulations and to those. they would add supplemental requirements To the command not to work on the Sabbath they. added the idea that carrying a burden was a form of work They then faced the question of. determining exactly what constituted a burden They decided that a burden is food equal to the. weight of a fig enough wine for mixing in a goblet milk enough for one swallow honey enough. to put on a wound oil enough to anoint a small member of the body water enough to moisten. eye salve paper enough to write a customs house notice ink enough to write two letters of the. alphabet reed enough to make a pen and so on and so on 3. But as you read through the Gospels you will see that Jesus had no time for these traditions. Speaking to the Pharisees he said, Mark 7 6 8 Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites as it is written This people honors me with. their lips but their heart is far from me 7 in vain do they worship me teaching as doctrines the. commandments of men 8 You leave the commandment of God and hold to the tradition of men. C But while Jesus had no respect for the traditions of men He had great respect for the Law. of God This is what He says in Matthew 5 17 18, Matthew 5 17 18 Matthew 5 17 20 Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets. I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them 18 For truly I say to you until heaven and earth pass. away not an iota not a dot will pass from the Law until all is accomplished. 1 Jesus did not want anyone to think wrongly about His role as the Messiah King He. had not come to abolish Law or the Prophets The phrase Law and Prophets. here is really shorthand for the entire Old Testament Genesis to Malachi This was. the Bible of Jesus Day Jesus had not come to destroy or nullify the Old. Testament In His ministry He would do and teach nothing that contradicted the. Law of God,John MacArthur Matthew 1 7 254, 2 Instead Jesus came to fulfill the Old Testament What does it mean that Jesus. would fulfill the Law and the Prophets Certainly Jesus would obey all the. commands of the OT fulfill all righteousness Matt 3 15 But when Jesus says He. has come to fulfill them He is referring primarily to the reality that all of the Old. Testament pointed forward to Him When Jesus read the Old Testament He. rightly saw Himself everywhere The sacrifices and ceremonies the Tabernacle and. the Temple all pointed to Jesus The Old Testament was also filled with direct. prophecies of the coming Messiah Jesus understood that He had come to fulfill all. of those types and shadows and prophecies, 3 That is why Jesus says what He does in 5 18 For truly I say to you until heaven and.
earth pass away not an iota not a dot will pass from the Law until all is. accomplished Jesus will say Truly Lit Amen I say to you 30 times in the. Gospel of Matthew 4 It is a sign of Jesus unique authority And the authoritative. King declares the permanency of the Old Testament Until heaven and earth pass. away the word of God in the Old Testament will remain true and valid Jesus says. this will be the case until all is accomplished The Old Testament prophesied the. death of the Messiah and Jesus had come to die on the cross The Old Testament. also prophesied the restoration of all things in a renewed heavens and earth at the. end of time cf Isaiah 65 17 25 And Jesus is declaring that that prophecy will be. fulfilled as well Every prophecy of the Old Testament is sure They will all be. Application If you are with us and you are not a Christian we are glad you are with us Many people. think of Jesus as a greater religious teacher But we want you to understand that Jesus understood. Himself to be much more a mere religious teacher He claimed that all of history is ultimately about. Him Jesus understood Himself to be at the very center of God s plan of salvation Have you. considered the claims of Christ Don t be content to listen to what others say about Jesus Have you. ever explored what Christ said about Himself If you would like to know more about Jesus we would. love to study the Bible with you and help you explore that. Application Christians we need to read and study the Old Testament Many Christians stay away from. the Old Testament because they are afraid that they won t understand it And if we just read it has a. history book and look for practical tips on how to live our lives we WILL NOT understand it The Old. Testament contains true history and that history has a point Jesus But as Paul warns us it is. possible to miss the point, Colossians 2 16 17 Therefore let no one pass judgment on you in questions of food and drink or with. regard to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath 17 These are a shadow of the things to come but the. substance belongs to Christ, When you are reading the Old Testament don t get bogged down in all the details concerning the. shadows The point of the Old Testament is not the sacrifices or the Temple or the Sabbath. ultimately They are important But their importance is that they serve to point to Christ So ask the. R T France The Gospel of Matthew in NICNT Grand Rapids William B Eerdmanns Publishing Company. Holy Spirit to show you substance Jesus Make one of your questions about the OT passage you are. studying What does this passage teach me about Jesus and God s plan of redemption through Him. 4 But I also want us to notice something about the nature of Old Testament from. this passage Jesus says until heaven and earth pass away not an iota not a dot. will pass away from the Law until all is accomplished Matthew probably uses the. word iota which is the smallest letter in the Greek alphabet to represent the. yodh which is the smallest letter in the Hebrew alphabet The word dot. stroke NIV here refers to the smallest part of the letter just a dash or tail that. would help separate one letter from another This is important for us to. understand Jesus is saying that not only are the words that God inspired and. authoritative but the authority of the Old Testament goes down even to the letters. and smallest stroke of the pen All of God s word is inspired It is all authoritative. And it is all useful for training in righteousness 2 Tim 3 16 17. Jesus had the highest possible view of the authority and importance of the Old Testament Scriptures. II Christians should also have a high view of the Law 5 19. Matthew 5 19 Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others. to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven but whoever does them and teaches them. will be called great in the kingdom of heaven, A Here we see that how we think about the Law of God matters King Jesus had the highest. regard for Law of God and the citizens of the Kingdom should follow His lead Do you see. the word Therefore here Jesus is saying that because the word of God in the OT is sure. and will stand until the end of time it is important obey it We are to obey the. commandments and we are to teach others to obey the commandments. B But what does that mean for Christians today Are we bound to follow ALL of the. commandments of the Old Testament Should we have a temple Should we offer burnt. offerings and sacrifices to God Should we be holding annual festivals No The fact that. Jesus came to fulfill the Law helps us understand our relationship to the Law And this is. important because 5 19 says those who disobey the Law and teach others to do the same. will be called least in the kingdom of heaven So what does it mean to keep the. commandments of the Law,The Three Parts of the Law. Theologians have traditionally divided the OT Law into three parts the civil the ceremonial. and the moral Jesus came to fulfill all three, a The civil law referred to those parts of the OT Law that spoke to Israel as a nation It regulated.
things like agriculture how citizens were to resolve disputes how they were to dress and the. role of kings Jesus fulfilled the civil Law at the cross When the Jews rejected and killed Jesus. God ceased to deal with them as a nation and in 70 AD Jerusalem was destroyed 5 As such the. See the discussion in John MacArthur Matthew 1 7 257. civil law of the OT is no longer binding today Christians do not relate to God as part of the. Jewish nation We relate to God through Christ, b The ceremonial law consisted of the feasts ceremonies and sacrifices that the people of Israel. were to offer to God Jesus fulfilled the ceremonial law in that all those feasts ceremonies. and sacrifices pointed to Him When Jesus died on the cross He was the final and perfect. sacrifice that satisfied God s wrath towards His people We don t need the shadows anymore. because now we have the substance Christ That is the point of the book of Hebrews in the. New Testament, c Finally Christ also came to fulfill the moral Law of God These are the commandments found. throughout the Old Testament for how we are to live They are summarized by the Ten. Commandments that we read earlier in the service Christ obeyed the moral Law of God and. because He did so He was the perfect Lamb of God who took away the sin of the world John. 1 29 But moral law of God was not done away with at the cross The moral law is a. reflection of the UNCHANGING character of God Because God doesn t change the moral law. never changes, C In 5 19 when Jesus uses the word commandments He is referring to this third aspect of. the Law the moral Law of God Christians are still obligated to keep the moral Law of God. Jesus clearly teaches this throughout the rest of Matthew 5 when he discusses moral issues. such as anger lust and divorce Christians are not free to lie murder and commit adultery. We are not antinomians Lit No Law Jesus expects His followers to obey the. commandments of God But as we will see a little later Christians do not keep the Law in. order to merit the favor of God Christians keep the moral Law of God out of love for God. D And in 5 19 we see that keeping the commandments of the Law is a matter of great. importance Remember that in the Sermon on the Mount Jesus is addressing His. followers the citizens of the Kingdom These are genuine Christians They will be with. Christ in heaven one day But one s standing in heaven will depend on how one obeys and. teaches others to obey the Law of God in this life. a Those Christians who relax even the least of the commandments by. disobeying them or ignoring them or modifying them to make them easier to. follow will be considered least in the Kingdom of Heaven They will be saved. but their life will not have counted for much They will be saved but as through. fire 1 Cor 3 15 6 On the other hand those who keep the commandments and. teach others to do the same will be called great in the kingdom of heaven In. effect in 5 19 Jesus is saying live in such a way as to make yourself the happiest. man or woman in heaven It matters that Christians obey the moral law of God It. is not too much to say that how much joy we will experience in heaven depends on. our obedience to the Law of God in this life, Leon Morris The Gospel According to Matthew in PNTC Grand Rapids William B Eerdmanns Publishing. Company 1992 110, Illustration Jesus is saying that the way we view the Scriptures affects the way God looks at us This is.
because the way we look at God s word demonstrates what we think of God If we don t think God s. word is important it can only mean that we don t think God is important When my children do not. listen to me but instead disobey me it is a clear demonstration of what they think of me at that. moment I am not important enough to obey In the same way when we disobey God s commands we. reveal what we truly believe about God in that moment But God will not honor those who do not. honor Him God honors those who honor His word, Isaiah 57 15 All these things my hand has made and so all these things came to be declares the LORD. But this is the one to whom I will look he who is humble and contrite in spirit and trembles at my word. Application Did you notice that Jesus refers to the least of the commandments Jesus clearly. understands some commands to have more weight than others cf Matt 22 36 37 However the point. Jesus is making here is that Christians should have the highest regard for all of God s commands If we. are honest we sometimes act like some of the commands of God aren t important enough to obey We. would never murder someone but we don t think embellishing a story a bit to put ourselves in a better. light is that big a deal We would never commit adultery but why is it that we make excuses about. watching things on TV or the internet that we know displease God We would never steal but we make. excuses on why we don t need to show up church regularly even though God commands us to do so. Those who want to honor God will strive to keep all His commands whether great or small. Application Obey the commands of God Obedience to God s commands demonstrates a love for. John 14 15 If you love me you will keep my commandments. Live today in such a way that when God looks at you He says of you This one love Me He trembles at. My word He is great in the Kingdom of Heaven, Christians understand that it is important to keep the commands of God but Christians also. understand that keeping God s commands is not what saves us Christians are saved by the perfect. righteousness of Christ And that is what we see in 5 20. III A high view of the Law teaches us our need for the perfect righteousness of Christ 5 20. Matthew 5 20 For I tell you unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees you. will never enter the kingdom of heaven, A I can imagine the shock that must have gone across the face of His hearers as Jesus spoke. these words In 5 20 Jesus says something astounding In the eyes of the common Jewish. man or woman in the first century the scribes and Pharisees were the righteous ones. They were zealous for God Rom 10 2 The scribes considered themselves to be the. spiritual descendants of Ezra in the OT They were the experts in the Law who taught others. how to keep the Law Those studying to be Pharisees would memorize the entire. Pentateuch the first five books of the Old Testament They gave a tenth of everything they. had to God down to their spices Matt 23 23 In their thinking they kept everyone of the. 613 commands of the Law AND they kept the traditions of the fathers Surely if anyone was. going to get into heaven it was the scribes and Pharisees. B What is Jesus saying here Is he saying that those who follow Him need to keep the. commands of God better than the Pharisees Is He saying that since Pharisees tithed 10. of everything including their spices we need to tithe 11 Is He saying that since the. Pharisees had memorized the first five books of the Bible so we need to memorize Joshua. as well No He is saying that the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees was. deficient He is saying that we need a BETTER righteousness than the scribes and. Pharisees possessed The religion of the scribes and Pharisees was the religion of human. accomplishment They thought they could be GOOD ENOUGH for God Paul points out. their error in Romans 10 1 3, Romans 10 1 3 Brothers my heart s desire and prayer to God for them is that they may be saved 2 For. I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God but not according to knowledge 3 For being ignorant. of the righteousness of God and seeking to establish their own they did not submit to God s. righteousness, 1 The problem with the Pharisees wasn t that their view of the Law was too high The.
problem with the Pharisees was that their view of the Law was too low They. thought the Law of God was the kind of thing they could actually keep They made. the commands of God something external and outward But as Jesus will explain. from 5 21 48 keeping the Law is a matter of the heart The Pharisees that keeping. the Law and traditions of the elders made them good enough for God. C But the Bible teaches us the kind of righteousness we need is not good enough. righteousness but PERFECT righteousness, Matthew 5 48 You therefore must be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect. 1 It is tragic really The scribes and Pharisees studied the OT Scriptures so intently. but they completely missed the point of the OT Law The Law was not given to save. us but to show us our need for a Savior cf Gal 3 24 When the Law is. understood RIGHTLY the way Jesus will explain it throughout the rest of Matt 5 it. crushes our self righteousness But it does that so that we would seek a better. righteousness a righteousness outside of ourselves And that righteousness is. only possible through faith That is why Paul continues as He does in Romans. Romans 10 4 For Christ is the end Gk telos end completion of the law for righteousness to everyone. who believes, The Gospel teaches us that if we are to be saved it is only by faith in Christ not by the works of the. Romans 1 16 17 For I am not ashamed of the gospel for it is the power of God for salvation to. everyone who believes to the Jew first and also to the Greek 17 For in it the righteousness of God is. revealed from faith for faith as it is written The righteous shall live by faith. Application Let me ask you this morning where are you looking for righteousness Is your. understanding of Christianity and the Bible that it is a religion that teaches us how to be good enough. for God so that He will accept us We have taken great pains this morning to destroy that view If you. would be saved you must be perfect It is not a matter of being good enough It is a matter of. perfection The Pharisees had a religion of good enough But Jesus tells us this morning. Matthew 5 20 Unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees you will never enter. the kingdom of heaven, If you have never trusted in Christ to save you I pray you will do so this morning Come to Him He will. give you His perfect righteousness as a gift,Conclusion. So what is the connection between being given the righteousness of Christ and obeying the. commands of God Well the blessing of salvation includes more than receiving the righteousness of. Christ it also includes receiving a new heart that loves God and desires to keep His Law This blessing. was promised in the OT, Ezekiel 11 18 19 And I will give them one heart and a new spirit I will put within them I will remove the.
heart of stone from their flesh and give them a heart of flesh 20 that they may walk in my statutes and. keep my rules and obey them And they shall be my people and I will be their God. Is that you this morning Has God given you a heart that loves Him and desire to do His will If so. praise His Name You will never earn God s favor by keeping His Law but you can rejoice because you. have already been given His favor in Christ and that can NEVER be taken from you. May God encourage us to obey Him this week out of a heart of love and gratitude.
